revision 5/9/2012 pr eliminary and all contents are subject to change without prior notice. ? seaward electronics, inc., 2006. ? www.seawardinc.com .cn ? page 3 application hints like any lin ear voltage regulator, se81 19 requires external capacitors to ensure stability. the external capacitors must be carefully selected to ensure performance. thermal considerations it i s important that the thermal limit of the package is not exceeded. the se8 119 has built - in thermal protection. when the thermal limit is exceeded, the ic will enter protection, and v out will be pulled to ground. the power dissipation for a given applica tion can be calculated as following: the power dissipation (p d ) is p d = i out * [v in ? v out ] the thermal limit of the package is then limited to p d(max) = [t j ? t a ]/ ja where t j is the junction temperature, ta is the ambient temperature, and ja is aroun d 150c/w for SE8119. SE8119 is designed to enter thermal protection at 1 50 c. for example, if t a is 25c then the maximum p d is lim ited to about 1.0w. in other words, if i out = 5 00ma, then [v in ? v out ] can not exceed 2 v. input capacitor an input capacitor of at least 10f is required. ceramic or tantalum can be used. the value can b e increase d w ithout upper limit. output capacitor an output capacitor is required for stability. it must be placed no more than 1 cm away from the v out pin, and connected directly between v out and gnd pins. the minimum value is 22f but may b e increase d withou t limit.
